Examples are commonly taken as illustrations of a general principle or argument formulated independently. In contrast to that, I argue that in moral reflection, examples to which we are exposed (often randomly) guide our thought and flesh out our sense of what is necessary or, on the other hand, impossible. While examples that enter, in this capacity, our reflection may prove to be a counterproductive factor for the enterprise of coining normative moral theories, they foster our understanding of what it is to “have a human life to lead” (to borrow Cora Diamond’s term) or more generally our “understanding of human difficulties” (to borrow Rush Rhees’ characterisation of wisdom). A reading of Cao Xueqin’s Dream of the Red Chamber provides an example of this working of examples.
